Why visiting matters

Photos and brochures are useful, but nothing beats standing in a home and imagining your life in it. A visit tells you how a home feels, how the household runs and whether you can picture yourself there. Here is how to get the most out of it.

Who to bring

Bring anyone who helps you make decisions: family, a friend, your support coordinator. A second set of eyes notices things you might miss, and talking it through afterwards helps.

What to look for

Notice how the home feels, not just how it looks. Is it light? Is it quiet? Could you see your own things in the bedroom?

Check the practical details too: bathroom access, kitchen layout, outdoor space, and how far the local shops and transport are.

Questions worth asking

Who else lives here, and what are they like? Who are the regular support workers? What does a typical weekday look like? How are house decisions made? What happens if something breaks? Good providers answer these directly.
